Copy Editing Wk 4

Missed my weekly class update as well this past week. And here I thought I had nothing to blog about...

Week 4 of my UCLA Online Copy Editing course focused on writing headlines. This seemed exciting to me - the professor really stressed that this was a chance for us to be creative! Then the creativity was stopped dead in its tracks by the fact that you have to count spaces for headlines. How did this course become all about math? Letters in headlines have values ranging from half a space to two spaces and the most flexibility allowed is to short the headline by two spaces. That's pretty specific!

Apparently I did well though and she liked what I came up with overall.

Tomorrow, I'll blog about week 5 - using photos and captions.

It's amazing that the amount of news that happens in the world every day always just exactly fits the newspaper. -Jerry Seinfeld
