Copy Editing Wk 2

My second week of the copy editing course was more nerve-racking for me than the first and I have to put a lot of blame on that B+. When I was looking into courses or workshops for this Fall, I didn't set out to take an accredited graded course. Looking back, it probably would've been better for me to take something ungraded. Reading the same materials, performing the same work and getting the same feedback without the label of a B+ would've left me in a much better frame of mind going into week 2.

I was able to complete my readings on the flight back from Vegas. The week 2 readings were about fact-checking and our exercise was a mess of errors. Looking at this from the perspective of a writer, I was appalled at the quality of the article we were given to edit. Do people really turn in pieces of such poor quality? Or was this just an exaggerated example for the sake of the exercise? In the end, I really wrestled with the project, not wanting to over-edit but wanting to push myself to do more than last week. My result was an A this time around. She also gave specific praise about my decision to delete an entire paragraph from the article. I had struggled a lot with that issue so I was glad to see it addressed.

Also stressful was the inclusion of a current events quiz. I can't say this is my strongest area and I put the quiz off as long as possible. Kicking and screaming, I finally took the quiz over the weekend and found it to be nowhere near as bad as I had anticipated.

Week 3 includes another current events quiz, more reading, and two exercises. I can tell just from quick glance that it's going to be a struggle again.
