Copy Editing Wk 3
After receiving an A on my week 2 assignments, I felt better about week 3. In addition to checking for grammar, spelling and facts, we also had to edit for "style and substance". We had two articles, one on Michigan politics and another on a water-tasting contest. I thought I did ok but my grade only ended up being a B. I'm disappointed.
I seem to be having a problem wrapping my head around the professor's idea of what an editor should do. Not saying I'm right - she's obviously in a better place to know about these things than I'm in. However, editing to me means correcting facts and grammar, maybe making a few suggestions. Her idea is that the editor completely rewrites the article, adding facts and entire sections to a piece. In short, I'm underediting according to her definition.
I'm starting to wonder if I picked the wrong class. The week 4 material is all about headlines. The IDEA of headlines is interesting. The MATH part sucks. But more on that next week.
