Dave Matthews Band

Yesterday, Mike lucked into one of those nice perks that come with his job from time to time - free tickets to the Dave Matthews Band concert at Walnut Creek. Neither of us are huge DMB fanatics but for free? Sure!

We actually saw DMB play this venue a few years ago (it must've been pre-blog, I'm thinking 2004) and, to be honest, it was an awful show. We had lawn seats and could barely hear. What we could hear wasn't good. Totally unimpressed.

This time, we had actual seats, dead center and just behind the VIP section. It was an awesome unobstructed view. The band sounded great and while I'm not a mega-fan, I can definitely appreciate their musicianship. I did sometimes feel like every song ended in a 10 minute jam. And rather than be a good thing, it got old. Even the songs I recognized seemed to degenerate into a lot of nothing. Also, since I'm unfamiliar with some of his more recent songs, I noticed how mumbly he is. Making out the lyrics to anything was nearly impossible. Best song? A cover of Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, which I managed to miss almost completely.

We also had backstage passes. Finding the "secret location" turned out to be a nightmare and the event staff was largely unhelpful - they offered directions that never got us where we needed to go until finally the 4th person we asked (no kidding) got us close enough we found it. The best part of the backstage pass was free drinks and food. The food was kind of sparse by the time we got there but free drinks saved us a ton of money. It doesn't take long when just bottled water is $4 each. And beer was $11 a cup.

Rumor was that we could meet the band with those backstage passes after the show. But since we were tired and had to work the next morning, we handed off our passes to the lady sitting next to us. She was a huge fan and very appreciative of the pass so I hope she was able to get a picture or at least to see them up close.

A good night overall. Great seats, nice weather, fun music.

We look at each other wondering what the other is thinking but we never say a thing. -Dave Matthews Band, "Ants Marching"
